I Had a Conversation With Burnout.

And what it told me changed everything.

I've been having a rather interesting relationship with burnout lately.

Not the kind that announces itself dramatically, but the familiar, creeping kind. The kind I've come to recognise through the subtle signs that my body and mind are beginning to reach capacity.

For me, it starts with cognitive overload.

Imagine a cupboard you've been stuffing things into for years. At some point, you gave up trying to keep it organised. Everything is just shoved in wherever there's space.

And then one day, you need to fit something else inside.

You open the door, push another thing in, and the whole lot comes tumbling out.

That's what cognitive overload feels like to me.

It's not necessarily the big things that trip me up. It's the smallest things.

Remembering someone's name. Breaking a simple task into manageable steps. Making a decision that ordinarily wouldn't require a second thought.

Suddenly, the cogs just won't turn.

And I know what comes next.

The heightened emotions. The irritation. The overwhelm.

Then the numbness.

Then the lethargy and apathy.

Eventually, my body's entire signalling system seems to shut down, as if to say, "We simply cannot do any more."

I've become familiar enough with this cycle to recognise the early warning signs.

But this time, I decided to do something different.

I decided to have a conversation with burnout itself.

What if burnout has its own consciousness?

I sat in my sanctuary and called in the spirit of burnout.

Not as a symptom to overcome, a problem to fix, or another personal failing to analyse.

But as an energetic intelligence.

A consciousness with something to say.

In my shamanic paradigm, everything holds chi. Everything carries its own vibration, its own intelligence, its own relationship with the world around it.

And rather than making this experience entirely about me, I became curious about something much bigger.

Because have you noticed how many people are talking about burnout lately?

I'm hearing it everywhere.

In spiritual communities. In corporate environments. Among entrepreneurs, parents, healers, and people who have never given a second thought to their spiritual development.

It's as though we're collectively experiencing something we can't quite put our finger on.

The persistent stress that doesn't disappear after a holiday.

The irritation that lingers despite a good night's sleep.

The exhaustion that doesn't seem to improve, no matter how much we simplify, change, rest, or introduce something new into our lives.

Something remains in the background.

So I asked burnout directly:

Why are you here?

Why are you visiting so many human beings at once?

And what role are you playing in this collective awakening?

The answer wasn't what I expected.

In this journey, the consciousness of burnout responded:

"I'm here to remind you of everything that doesn't align."

And then it continued.

"You are not here simply to get things done.

You are not here to do it all.

You are not here to look good.

You are not here to climb the ladder.

You are not here to follow a predetermined path.

And you are certainly not here for all the reasons your mind has convinced you that you are."

I sat with that.

And listened.

"I will show up whenever your energy, your output, your actions, and your behaviours are moving in a direction that no longer serves you."

Then something rather extraordinary happened.

Burnout acknowledged how inconvenient its presence was.

It knew how disruptive it could be.

But it offered something that immediately shifted my relationship with it.

"It's becoming harder and harder to get the attention of the human race.

There are changes ahead, and so many of you are still trying to live according to ways of being that no longer serve you.

I'm not your enemy.

I don't want to be the inconvenient truth.

But I am here to make the things that don't align with you increasingly difficult to ignore.

Even the smallest thing that doesn't serve you may begin to drain your energy so rapidly that you cannot help but notice."

And then came the part that really landed.

"Pay attention to how cleverly your mind and ego justify the things you already know aren't serving you.

Notice the reasoning.

The excuses.

The stories you tell yourself to keep doing what you've always done."

I instantly understood.

Not intellectually.

I felt it.

For the first time, I experienced a sense of companionship with something in my body that, for the life of me, I hadn't been able to fix.

What if burnout wasn't something I needed to fight?

What if, within this experience, there was an invitation to become radically honest about where my energy was going?

What if the very thing I had been resisting was trying to get my attention?

Now, I'm not suggesting that every experience of burnout has a spiritual cause, or that rest, medical support, and practical changes aren't important.

But within my own shamanic practice, this was an entirely new way of relating to what I was experiencing.

And it changed something.

So I decided to get myself out of the way.

After this journey, I knew there were still behaviours, attachments, and unconscious patterns influencing my decisions.

Things I could sense but couldn't quite move beyond.

So I reached for my Stalk Your Shadow Oracle Deck.

And I drew three cards.

Now, three shadow cards is quite a lot!

Anyone who's worked deeply with shadow archetypes knows that even one can open an extraordinary amount of self-inquiry.

But I knew I needed to see something.

And the cards certainly delivered.

🐇 The Rabbit — Your Environment Matters

The first card was the Rabbit.

An immediate reminder that the environment we inhabit, and the people we share our energy with, have an enormous influence on our ability to thrive.

A rabbit flourishes in the right conditions.

In the wrong environment, its nervous system is constantly scanning for danger, ready to flee at the slightest disturbance.

And I realised I hadn't been discerning enough.

Not just about where I spent my time, but who I spent it with.

Which environments expanded my energy?

Which relationships filled my heart with inspiration?

And where was I continuing to place myself in situations that created contraction?

Sometimes choosing what nourishes us means making decisions that feel strange, awkward, or unfamiliar.

But that doesn't make them wrong.

It simply means we're learning to honour the conditions in which we thrive.

🦁 The Lion — Lead Your Own Life

Next came the Lion.

And what a beautiful contrast.

Where the Rabbit invited me to recognise my environment, the Lion asked me to take responsibility for the direction of my life.

To stop waiting.

To stop negotiating with the stories.

To find that fierce, grounded expression of divine feminine power that doesn't need permission to lead.

There's something extraordinary about the strength of a big cat.

It doesn't need to explain its presence.

It simply knows what it is.

The Lion reminded me that sometimes the most loving thing we can do for ourselves is to become the strength we've been waiting for.

To lead the way.

Even when we don't know exactly where we're going.

🦅 The Eagle — Change Your Perspective

And finally, the Eagle.

The invitation to rise above it all.

To stop looking for one tangible thing to blame for how I was feeling.

Because burnout isn't always the result of one overwhelming responsibility, one difficult relationship, or one demanding season.

Sometimes it's the accumulation of hundreds of tiny misalignments.

The commitments we haven't questioned.

The expectations we've inherited.

The relationships we've outgrown.

The environments we've normalised.

The versions of ourselves we're still trying to maintain.

From the ground, these things can look completely unrelated.

But from above?

The Eagle sees the entire landscape.

All the moving parts.

All the connections.

All the places where our energy is being directed, and all the places where it's quietly leaking away.

Sometimes we don't need to change one thing. We need to change the perspective from which we're looking at everything.

And then something shifted.

I spent time with those three cards.

I journaled.

I sat with the questions.

I allowed the uncomfortable realisations to land.

I noticed where my mind wanted to justify, defend, or explain away what I was seeing.

And instead of immediately trying to fix everything, I simply allowed myself to understand.

To let those insights begin reshaping the familiar pathways of thought and behaviour.

And then, a few days later, I noticed a significant shift in my life.

Not because I'd conquered burnout.

Not because I'd finally figured out how to do everything.

But because I'd stopped treating it as my enemy.

I woke up with a completely different relationship to its presence.

Burnout and I were going to be friends.

An unusual friendship, I'll admit!

But one built on a willingness to listen.

If I began placing myself in situations where I was undervaluing my energy, perhaps that familiar feeling of depletion could become a cue to pause and examine what was happening.

If I slipped back into old shadow patterns, perhaps I could recognise them sooner.

Rather than waiting until I was completely exhausted, I could begin noticing the subtle signals and responding differently.

Listen.

Understand.

Pivot.

And perhaps, most importantly, stop making myself wrong for experiencing something that might be asking me to change.

I wonder if you've been feeling it too?

That strange exhaustion that doesn't quite make sense.

The sense that things you once tolerated are suddenly becoming intolerable.

The feeling that your body is no longer willing to cooperate with the expectations your mind continues to place upon it.

Maybe you're not simply being asked to become better at managing your life.

Maybe you're being invited to question the life you're trying so hard to manage.

What if the question isn't, "How do I get my energy back?"

What if the question is, "Where am I continuing to spend my energy on things that no longer serve me?"

That's the question I've been sitting with.

And I thought it might be worth sharing with you.

A little note about Stalk Your Shadow 🖤

Firstly, to everyone who has purchased a Stalk Your Shadow Oracle Deck, I genuinely want to say thank you.

It's been incredible hearing from you, seeing the cards being drawn in homes all over Australia and internationally, and witnessing the conversations and realisations they're inspiring.

There's something really special about knowing these little archetypes are finding their way into people's lives.

And with Christmas not too far away, I wanted to share a thought.

If you know someone who could benefit from a little shadow work but feels hesitant about diving into the deeper parts of themselves, an oracle deck can be a beautiful way to open that door.

There's no pressure.

No expectation.

You simply offer them the tool.

Whether they choose to draw a card, explore the journaling exercises, or leave it sitting on their bedside table until the right moment is entirely up to them.

Sometimes sharing something that's genuinely helped us is enough.

We don't need to take responsibility for what someone else does with it.

And for those of you who haven't seen it yet, we've also created a Shadow Work Bundle.

Alongside your physical oracle deck, you'll receive a beautifully curated PDF of reflective questions designed to help you explore your shadow patterns in your own space and time.

The questions are there to help you uncover those wonderful little epiphanies.

The moments when you suddenly recognise how an old belief, behaviour, or unconscious pattern has been quietly keeping part of your life stagnant.

And perhaps discover that you have far more freedom to change than you previously realised.

If that feels like something you'd enjoy exploring, or gifting to someone you love, you're welcome to take a look.

With love and a little curiosity about what our shadows have to teach us,

Heather x
